Liquid Silicone Mold Stripping: The Art and Science of Demolding

Stripping or demolding LSR parts is both an art and a science. The flexibility and tackiness of liquid silicone, combined with the complexity of mold geometries, make demolding one of the most critical steps in the LSR molding process.

Factors Affecting Demolding:

1. Part Geometry: Undercuts, thin walls, and complex shapes increase demolding difficulty.

2. Surface Finish: A high-polish cavity surface (SPI A1) is essential for easy release.

3. Release Agent: Some LSR formulations may require external release agents, though self-releasing grades are preferred.

4. Mold Design: Proper draft angles (3-5 degrees minimum), ejection system design, and air-assisted demolding features.

5. Process Parameters: Optimal curing time and temperature ensure the part has sufficient strength for demolding without being over-cured.

Mastering the demolding process is essential for achieving high yields and consistent quality in LSR production.
